How do I fix the sound on a VCR/DVD unit?

We thought we were getting a great deal when we found a Magnavox DVD/VCR combo in a pawn shop for $60; it costs $160 new. But when we got it home we realized that the sound is all wavy, it gets quiet the a little louder and sounds terrible. It was made in 2006. Is this worth fixing? If so, how do I fix it?
