i assume it's a diesel if so chances are it will be the crankshaft pully this is a common problem on the h d i engines the spot welds inside the pully fail causing it to break up and rattle replacement is the only option G S F or euro car parts sell them about 75 quid plus v a t

dont run engine any more. could bugger it up. if engine eats belt mashes up timing belt and engine. remove belt and check which pulley is causing problem. then replace pulley or auxillary item and fit new belt.
