how do i put digits bigger than the preset numbers?

If the codes was eg 8472
keep pressing button 1 until 8 is displayed
Button 2 untill 4 is displayed
Button 3 untill 7 is displayed
Button 4 untill 2 is displayed
then press the button to store the code (this button varies with different makes)
