Mend Main Beam Light

Why would my Nearside main/side lights stop working?

I recently went to change my near-side (drivers) main beam bulb as the light was not working. The side light however was functioning.

I noticed that the socket where the bulb is inserted was melted to the metal connectors of the bulb. (After taking the socket+bulb out of the light-enclosure, the side light stopped working)

I bought a new socket and snipped the old one off. I wired the new socket in exactly the same as the old one, however neither the side light or main beam work.

I have checked the fuses and come to the conclusion that the lights are not protected.

I have not been able to check if there is current.

Does anybody have an inkling into what this could be?

Is the power from the near side lights fed from the off-side? Does anybody know what the cable looks like if so? (i have noticed i have a cable hanging there, no idea what it is or where it came from, i certainly didnt unplug it)
