ps there is a circlip that has to be removed after removing the temperature control knob

yes......... but you may as well get a service kit to go with it at the same time. the temperature control knob has to be carefully levered out( there is a recess at the bottom)the next plastic control pulls off i needed wd 40 and two small screwdrivers to get it moving,
after that there is a brass nut to remove a reasonable size stillsons will get it off. after that its relatively straightforward , follow the diagrams
