My clio wont start just makes a spinning noise?

Going to work one morning my clio stopped as if my battery had been disconnected but all my dash lights where lit tryed to turn engine but got a spining noise from the engine read many forums with same symtoms some saying it the starter motor or a white wire friends say its my cam shaft can anyone shed a bit of light and point me in the right direction cheers its a clio Rsi 1600 w reg
