Ford Escort 1996. How do I run a separate earth from tailgate to main body?

no you shoudn't need to drill any holes ,there should be an earth point near to wiper motor where the motor itself earths, [there may be a couple of wires on this point i think they are brown] hope this helps k

Thanks again k for the swift response. Removed trim. Located earth point near to o/s/r light cluster. It's the connection at the other end I am now pretty confused about. Do I need to drill? - if so wherabouts?

Sorry to be a pest. Thanks for the help so far. Wouldn't blame you if you gave up on me.

forgot to say you need to remove inner tailgate trim first,prise it off carefully with a flat blade screwdriver,then start from inside. hope this helps k.let me know how you get on.

Thanks for the help K- much appreciated. Only a novice in truth but would like to have a go - its now just the starting point I'm unclear about. Any further advice most welcome.

a bit awkward to do but you can run it inside tailgate pushing it down o/s of rear screen [you can remove hrw terminal grommet to help it down- if need be pull a fair length through here and start again from this point ] ,and un-clip grommet near o/s hinge,locate wire, feed it through wiring grommet/tube, then you can tuck it under headlining and fasten to earth point near to o/s/r light cluster. other end can be fastened to earth point inside tail gate. this way wire wont be showing. worth doing, have done a couple with same faults.

The problem you have is broken wires between the tailgate and the body if you open the tailgate check inside the rubber gaiters one will be for the rear washer pipe the other will have the wiring inside peel the rubber back you should see the problem.
