Washer won't shut off unless unplugged?

My maytag bravos washer will not shut off when i press cancel. The lights go out but the motor is still going. It was in the process of doing a load - 19 mins left. It stayed that way for about 45 min. There is water in the bottom of the wash basin. I think the load may have been too heavy but no code appeared. I cannot get the machine to shut off unless I unplug it.
