Installing a Hotpoint Fridge thermostat?

How do you corectly locate the end of the 1.3m capilliary tube on a Hotpoint RLA54 fridge? These fridges have concealed chiller plates external to the main fridge body. The tube is inserted into a small hole behind the stat at the top of the fridge. When the tube reaches the back of fridge it just curls round under the top cover of the fridge. The obvious solution would be to remove the top, but it is well stuck down - won't budge. Anyone any ideas?
