help for transit van gear stick very stiff???

hi, i have a ford transit van 2003, and seem to get a recurring problem with the gear stick, it has become very stiff to put into gear so unuseable at the mo any ideas??? Also can anyone tell me the name of the box that the gear stick goes into please??
