selenium i meant.:)on older bikes lik the gp100 and kh100 and most bikes from the arly 80's they had seperate regulators and rectifiers but nowadays they combine the units for ease a regulator regulates voltage to around 14.4 volts on 12v bike and the rectifier part of it changes/rectifies the current from alternating current (ac)from the generator to direct current(dc) for charging the battery. But as BB says WE NEED to know the bike details like make and model and year of bike or reg number to determine the possible causes for the problem as some machines use different types of ignition systems.

the selinium rectifier is usually part of the regulator rectifier unit and cannot be seperated and will not interfere with the spark unless the battery is totally flat due to it not working.

What bike is it?
I would look at sparkplug, HT lead and then coil, in that order. Then go from there. Easier if you can check with a Mutimeter other wise it means replacing new parts to get to problem.
