Cistern not shutting off?

Make is a CYLIX double flush.

The cistern fills but has started to owerflow back into

toilet pan for about 5 or 10 seconds then shuts off.

When i try to take the lid off the push buttons turn

along with the outer screw so i'm afraid to unscrew

it in case i do damage to the workings inside .

Help!
