Rangemaster 110 Splashback Explosion?

This morning my wife went to lift the glass splashback on our Rangemaster 110 and it exploded into thousands of tiny peices for no apparent reason !
Has anyone else encountered this problem ? I thought the splashback was made of toughened glass , what could have caused this freak accident ?
