How can I fix the backlight on my Ipod Touch 1G?

I recently replaced the broken glass screen on my Ipod Touch 8Gb 1st Gen -this was more complicated and fiddly than I expected but it went OK ;-).
Now everything seems to work except the LCD Backlight so the screen is very dull and only readable by holding close to a light source.
Anyone have any ideas what I might have done, and any hints of tracking down the root of the problem?
