I bought my Kodak MD1063 a year ago and its been fine. I tried to use it the other day and found the battery dead so tried to charge it using the mains charger, and the charging light only stayed on for about 5 minutes then went off. The camera obviously wasn't charged so I tried it again and again and so on. It just wont charge even using the laptop. What can it be? The camera switches on then straight off again. I dont want to buy new cables or a battery unless theres a good chance this could be it.

It seems as if you need to buy a new battery for the camera. Improper charging can cause the battery to eventually stop working altogether as it seems to be doing in your case. You can prevent this from happening by letting it fully die before you charge it, and not unplugging it until it is finished.
