It's possible that your toilet itself is not blocked and that there's a blockage downstream - if you have an inspection pit outside, lift the lid and take a peek - if the "blocked" toilet is an upstairs one be prepared for a small foul fountain.
The outlet of my pit blocks from time to time - the first I know about it is that the water rises further up the WC pan than normal when flushing - then slowly sinks back.
I clear the blockage not by pushing into the outflow pipe but by pulling backwards - it takes about ten minutes. Better in winter - less pong. I use a six foot length of plastic barrier pipe - much easier than drain rods.
