Repair switch of vacuum cleaner or find charity to donate it to for same?

I have to go home and look at the brands of my two defunct vaccum cleaners.

I was told that the switch on one of them (a relatively modern and good make) had been mended (for £17) so that you could only turn it off at the wall.

That worked for months -- actually a few years.

However, one day I tripped against the vacuum and accidentally knocked the switch off.

What do you think could be wrong?

Is there a charity that will take it and repair it?
