How do I get new RW DVd's to record?

I have BUSH Video and DVD recorder. It's fine with the DVDs I have but they are a bit scratched. I have bought two new packs, different makes and I just get the message, 'searching for disk ' Is there something else I should be doing ? we have lost the instruction book. Thanks
