Daf 45 1997 starting issues?

I am experiencing difficulty getting my Daf 45 to start, everything functions correctly on positions 1 and 2 of the key switch but on turning to position 3 I get no excitment of the starter solenoid.

If I 'cross' the starter it fires up no problem, similarly if I 'cross' the wires on the relay mounted inside the cab it starts fine.

I have identified where all the wires go etc within the instrument binnacle but as theres a PCB I have gone no further.

Please, any ideas would be more than gratefully received!!!!!

As an addition I tried again this morning and it now wont start by crossing the stareter, simply turns over and over, possibly another seprate issue or related.

if the vehicle starts by crossing the solenoid it is more than likely to be the neutral detector circuit going to the gearbox, dont take for granted it is the loom, it could be the switch worn out,or the shaft in the gearbox remote which actuates the switch when in neutral.
good luck

just to update anyone who may have similiar problems it seems to be a fault in the pcb so I have have bridged a wire from the ignition plug over to the engine plug and the key works as it should.

on the two wires that are showing 2v,is one of them energised when key turned to start position ]try with relay out] it should be also check other [2v] wire that it is going to earth.if not if you check down wire you will poss be able to read wire code number which you mignt be able to trace to alternator,i think if you ground this wire it may start which would poss indicate faulty alternator. hope this helps .

My multiplugs are mounted down on the chassis rail but I have cleaned them all and appear to be fine. All PCB multiplugs have been cleaned and checked also.

When I checked continuity etc at the weekend all wires checked out ok, should I have been getting the solenoid excitment wire 'belling' out to ground?

On the relay mounted in passengers footwell area I have a ground (solenoid) 24v and two 2v readings?

Someone had suggested the solenoid is at fault but I would have thought by 'crossing' it the fault would remain were this to be the case.

james another place to check is on pcb where i think wiring plug from ign switch connects to ,could be bad connection. also if you open front flap and remove the cover in middle [6x10mm spanner size fixings] you may find that wiring connectors in here are green/corroded and giving you problems.

Thanks for the response, Sorry I should have added I have renewed the connections as all were corroded around alternator, fusible links etc cleaned up as I suspected those.

ensure that all wires on alternator are connected and none are broken, you may find that one of the small wires has broken -i think it forms part of starter circuit so that starter wont engage whilst engine is running/[charging].
