I just finished restoring a 1950's chrome formica table - the "cracked ice" pattern in grey. We used a buffing wheel with car buffing compounds on the aluminium - it came up brilliantly. For the top formica, there is a product I just discovered called Rejuvenate for cabinets and counters. You just pour it on and smooth it out with a circular motion using the microfibre mitt. Let it dry for 20 minutes, and you can put on another coat. I put on 4 coats in a row, and one the next morning. Then I used our car polishing buffer with a clean 'bonnet' on it, and it polished up just like it was new. The stuff is great and easy to use.... and no, I'm not connected with the company - just a happy user. I had tried car waxes and polishes to no avail. The one thing I did do was clean the surface with one of those "Magic Erasers" to get all of the dirt off.
