How do you open Citroen Xsara tailgate ?

get in the car with all the doors closed press and hold down the lock button on the dash untill you hear the tailgate pop open you then need to un lock the central locking on the key before you can lock it again tailgate should just slam shut i have same problem have cleaned tailgate switch and changed locking catch to no avail if any one has any ideas
