I have had similar problems and the only way to remove them is with a special tool. In my case it was a Mercedes diesel engineer who helped me out. It is a very delicate operation. The injector has to be stripped down internally to get it out. The other problem is that the bracket that holds it in has a very weak bolt that may shear off. This will then entail a bit of drilling and tapping to accommodate a larger bolt.
As far as the gunk goes - no easy answer for this one.
