How do I isolate the water supply to my heating radiators?

I need to replace both radiator valves on a particular radiator in the house. The system is gravity and has a small tank in the loft (bungalow) and a hot cylinder in the bathroom.
I have been told that i need to blank off the curved overflow pipe in the loft tank !
