Hot and cold mixer taps not mixing?

When i turn on the hot water only there is no problem but as soon as i turn the hot tap on only slightly the cold supply takes over.This also seems to push cold water back up the hot pipe as as soon as you put the hot back on it takes a second for the hot to come back.
Any help would be appreciated. As we have only just had the bathroom fitted.
