Mend Volkswagen Passat Check Engine Light Off

how can I get my check engine light off?

I need to get my '02 VW Passat inspected. Even though everything is fine that pertains to emissions, etc. they will not pass it because the check engine light is on and there is a computer fault. How can I get the light off and the computer fault temporarily reset?
