Are you sure it's a Resistor - unless they're very special resistors do not usually have writing on them - they usually have colour (color) bands to identify them.
Are there any visible markings on the component at all?
The "resistor" or whatever it is, has failed either on its own or because a fault somewhere else in the machine caused it to fail - components that "burn-up" seldom do so spontaneously - a resistor will discolour over time if the Wattage rating is too low, else a fault caused it to take too much current - i.e. replacing the component may not necessarily solve the problem.
