What are the symptoms of low transmission fluid? Nissan micra screeches and rattles when started and then won't drive. Could it be that fluid has never been changed or is it nothing to do with it?

Ye gods...I'm not sure if these have a continuously variable transmission or a truly automatic one, but you need professional advice for this one...get the car to a dealer if you can - failing that, ask the workshop manager for his opinion. The transmission fluid would need to be very low to give symptoms like these, and a fluid leak would be obvious under the car.
