Smoke came out of foot pedel?

I have inherited a Singer 413 model. Pretty old but works really well, until smoke came out of the foot control. How do I open it, seems imposible. don want to use brute force. The pedal stuck on at high speed then smoke came out of pedal and I switched it of quickly. Need to open pedal?? thank You Mrs Wallace
