Incorrect position shown on Audi A6 sat nav?

Old style A6 Avant in built Audi sat nav shows wrong position when it is wet for a few days. When dry all OK. Put Duck tape over GPS antenna at base of radio aerial and worked well for 6 weeks until left out in 24 hrs+ of heavy rain. Put non setting silicon round base and problem cured for 2 mths. But now problem back again.
Is a new antenna required or just removal of existing and water proofing? How do I get access to GPS antenna? There is a circular top Marked GPS which appears to be removable - how does it come off?

I had this on my 2000 A6 Avant. I was stuck near Stoke.

Bought an aerial from ebay for £8.99 (make sure it has the 90 degree angle female SMB connector).

Stuck the aerial under the dash above the glove box (there's a space next to the air bag).

Now got 3 to 8 satellites (average 5/6)

I had a similar issue and had to get the GPS receiver unit on the roof replaced at a cost of about £240!!
One way to tell is to see how many satellites the SatNav is receiving - see the instruction book on how to do this. When working properly in an open area should see 5 or 6 and needs a minimum of 3 (I think) to be able to locate your position

I had this problem and the fix was a replacement antenna which the garage did under warranty so don't know the cost

I have a '02 A6 with the same problem, currently in the Irish Sea. This may or may not be coupled with a vertical hold issue on the screen which seems to activated when the TV is used with the engine off. Eventually goes away.
Any fixes/faults known discovered about either issue?
