renault scenic megane 1.6 8v fuel problem?

driving down the road and car loses all revs and fails to maintain tick over. turn off and on again and it drives for another short distance. i had to do this all the way home. some times i can hear the pump still running whilst driving and sometimes i can't. are there any sensors that could be causing this. any help would be great thanks
