Mend Toilet Overflow Flushing

How can I stop my cistern overflowing?

If I have not flushed the loo for a while water starts running out of the overflow pipe.

Is this something to do with the float in the cistern?

Indeed it is - all float valves have some sort of adjustment on them, but occasionally a new washer is needed.
