Hi Emma
On my Briggs and Stratton the primer assembly comes in two parts. The rubber primer and a plastic retaining clip. The clip holds the rubber primer (bulb) in position . It has two small extensions which clip into two retaining holes in the primer housing. To remove the primer assembly you first need to use a screwdriver to push the clips out of the retaining holes (This is a little bit tricky, but ok ) There is a hole in the housing opposite one of the clips so you can just about push a screwdriver in to move the clip out of its position ! You need to push hard ! When the clips are out of the retaining holes (one clip out would be enough if you are prepared to pull hard enough with a pair of small pliers or something like that ! I was quite brutal doing it, but you are throwing it away afterwards anyway ! ) you can then pull the plastic clip right out of the housing and remove the primer itself. To reassemble. Firstly clean out inside the housing, and then push the replacement primer back into the housing as far as it will go. Secondly, push the plastic retaining clip in (with the clip parts facing outwards ) until the clips click into the retaining holes. It takes quite a bit of pressure to get the clips inserted into the two holes, but they went in eventually ! Be very careful during this replacement if you are using sharp tools you could puncture the primer ! Use something blunt and do be prepared to PUSH VERY HARD ! A replacement kit comes complete with clip and primer. REMEMBER this is for a Briggs and Stratton engine with the primer facing forward at the front of the ( horizontal ) engine ! I replaced mine two days ago. The clip is the tricky part, but you could do it ok. just be patient and take it easy ! Very good luck !
