I have a renault scenic and sat nav works off back cigarette lighter but?

I have a renault scenic and sat nav works off the back cigarette lighter (which we need for kids dvd player on long journey) but goes back to the 'welcome' page when we plug it in the front one, it won't bring up menus or anything - any suggestions
