It could be the element - I had a man out to look at mine the other day and thats what he thinks it is... they are really hard to buy thou!

You probably have a dead short somewhere to knock out the power. They are potentailly dangerous. You could ask an electrician to check that the mains cable and plug and socket are OK. Why not call Comet (Proline is one of theirs I think.) and see what they say.
