when i am driving around town my cooling fan keeps going on and off , i have done a gas test on the cooling system which come up negative and replaced the thermostat, the pump has been tested and is working , if i stay at 40 mph it runs at about 88'c soon as i hit traffic within seconds it goes up rather quickly and then the fan cuts in and when i pull up and turn the engine off and look under the bonnet you can see the water in the expansion tank bubbling when its at 92'c or above any idea's plz

I assume the gas test was a "sniff test" for hydrocarbons (exhaust fumes) in the coolant. The negative result would suggest it's not head gasket failure, but it might be still worth doing a compression test as steray suggests. (Easy for me to say as I have the tools, so it doesn't cost me.)
If it was my car I'd check the radiator for blockages. Take it off and give it a good flush with a hose. Remember to run the water through in both directions.
How did you check the water pump?
Is your coolant mixture correct, when was it last changed? Anti-freeze raises the boiling point as well as lowering the freezing point.

hi mathew, have your car compression tested on each cylinder it may be the head gasket best of luck
