I assume the gas test was a "sniff test" for hydrocarbons (exhaust fumes) in the coolant. The negative result would suggest it's not head gasket failure, but it might be still worth doing a compression test as steray suggests. (Easy for me to say as I have the tools, so it doesn't cost me.)
If it was my car I'd check the radiator for blockages. Take it off and give it a good flush with a hose. Remember to run the water through in both directions.
How did you check the water pump?
Is your coolant mixture correct, when was it last changed? Anti-freeze raises the boiling point as well as lowering the freezing point.
