i have a new hotpoint fridge, the numbers are 1-4. Can anyone tell me which is the coldest.

We have just turned our Hotpoint fridge to number 4 as it was on 2 and reading 14 degrees. We were told to turn it to 4 and now the temperature is falling! apparently the higher the number the colder the fridge!
