how can i fix my sony ericsson k850i?

my sony ericsson k850i phone when you turn it on only the lights on the button work but the screen wount turn on it stays black

Sony Ericsson Sony Ericsson K850i Telephones, Mobile Phones Lights Button Work

The same has happened to my k850i, i have took it to the shop & its only £10 to be fixed but the downside is that you will loose everything you have stored on it.
They have said its a software error & is very common in these phones.
I am on my 3rd replacement k850i
