heater plugs flash,engine stops ford mondeo 2001? ?

ford mondeo diesel estate 2001.the heater plug light flashes on console and then car engine cuts out.i have to pull over quickly turn off the engine with the keys and it starts straight away.only for the same to happen a mile up the road.any ideas please?
