how can i remove the cistern lid to my ideal standard push button cistern?

Just saved £65 call out fee to stop water overflowing into pan. Took five minutes, three of which to find this site. The two cistern buttons both pull out vertically, as described below, by pressing one to make it easy to pull up the other. They reveal the large screw that holds cover on. The float controlling water depth is on a screw thread that is easy to turn without tools.

Sam Freer - March 2006 - Possibly the best answer to Removing the lid - I liked the description : " an indentation on the hidden face (side) of the non-pressed button."
Note the plastic screw on mine had a long, shallow slot so I used a blunt chisel of a similar width to unscrew it.

Mine has letters "is" on the big button and letters "1/2" on the small one and no screws under them. If you push buttons down you find two square holes on the inside surface of the ring. The way to remove the lid is to rotate the ring like a screw, left wise, it comes out leaving the buttons in place. You can use the square holes to get better grip of the ring. Take the lid up and you find out that the two buttons are part of the machine itself. Have fun ... :-)

My Cistern has two buttons but there is a plastic centre piece between them and I cannot see the other button when the first one is pressed down. Is there another way to get the lid off? I must have a different model.

Mine must be different from all the others ,I tried the prising method & it didn,t budge ,so then I tried unscrewing the outer chrome ring & bingo it came off leaving the two push buttons in place.Pedro

I have just been searching for the answer to this very question, and wanted to post it here for others who are in this situation.

The answer is: if it is a dual-flush system (so there's a large button and a small button), you push the large button down, and while it's down use a flat head screw driver to pop the small button out, then do the same for the large button (using the space where the small button was to lever the big button out) and then you use the screw driver to unscrew the screw at the bottom holding the ring in place and then you can remove the cistern

Brilliant! All I would add is that there is a tiny indentation in the middle of the vertical face of each button that you can use to help you prise it off. Use a wide flat-bladed screwdriver (which you will need anyway for the 'big white screw').

Push and hold down either of the buttons. Prise upwards and remove the other button out of the cistern with a screw driver. Prise up the first button and remove it. Simply unscrew the white plastic screw that holds in the chrome fitting. Lift out the chrome fitting. Take the lid of the cistern off.
I wanted to limit the amount of water entering the cistern. The clip on the rod connecting the black float can be moved by hand.

To prise off the buttons, you need to first push either button down, to reveal an indentation on the hidden face of the non-pressed button. You can use a screwdriver to lift off the non-pressed button. The remaining button can simply lifted off and the holding screw is revealed. Unscrew the holding screw and lift off the lid.

You have to carefully prise off the two buttons. Underneath is a large screw that has to be undone. Then the chrome button surround can be removed and the lid is free.

To reinstall, you may need to press in the buttons on either side of the syphon unit and raise up the frameword that has the thread for the screw. Make sure the chrome surround is correctly aligned and then replace the lid and surround and tighten the screw. The push buttons are then pressed back into place.
