putting spring into yale lock?

I am completely flumaxed. I have a yale type lock and have had to take it apart as the part connected to the bolt was bent and the bolt wouldn't extend out of the lock properly. However now when I go to put it together again I can't figure out how the spring goes back. I know it goes around the bit where the screw goes in when the backplate is put on but can't for hte life of me figure out where the 2 arms go. 1 of the arms is straight and the other is the other is the same length but has 2 bends in it to form a step shape.Any help would be greatly appreciated!

HI I think my problem might be a little different - we can get into our house but not out! the handle on the back of the yale lock is free moving and we cant get out ! but we can get in using the key from the outside. Does anyone know if this is a "part" problem or require a whole new lock?

thanks you

Hi Guys,
Brilliant details but, my lock is slightly different. Do not have the circular piece the spring sits on. I have two smaller diameter poles either side of the lock. Any suggestions (apart from the obvious?)!

I had the same problem myself, today! Took me a while to work it out! And it's hard to explain, so I've put a URL below that will take you to a 'photo of the correctly fitted spring on my Facebook page.

with the back plate off hold the lock with the triangular in/out bit to the right. now place the round bit of the spring where the backplate screw goes so that the two arms of the springs are facing to the right. now each end of the arms goes infront of a notch which is on the sliding mechanism. one on the top and one on the bottom (bit fiddly) when you put the back plate back on it will secure it better. hope this helps
