The EGR valve needs to be removed and cleaned properly of hardened soot. It can also be replaced.

I cleaned egr on avensis diesel 2010 but did not notice any improvement, so next weekend looked again and the egr was once more black with soot.

maybe suggestion here about blocking off the valve is a good idea?

I cleaned my egr but found the stepper motor was stuck. It uses a thread to keep in contact with position of valve. Managed to free it by pulling it outwards and using oil to lubricate it. That got rid of flat spot.

My 08 T180 was doing the same thing losing power and most noticeable in 1st gear. I removed EGR valve then added a additive that can be got in any parts store to reduce the burn off temp of the DPF. drove for a about 5 miles in third at 60mph and hasn't looked back... needed to burn off the soot from the DPF. worth a try.

I had all the problems mentioned here. Loss of power, black smoke etc, on my avensis D4D. I cleaned the EGR valve and it was ok for a short time and then the problems returned. I read that it was possible to blank off the EGR valve and take it out of action. I made a plate and fitted it behind the EGR valve and refitted it. The electrical system still thinks it's working and therefore no fault codes or lights. The problems have gone, the power has returned, and the fuel economy is miles better. Just blank it, it's no use to anyone.

My 2004 Avensis losses power, it idles at about 1000rpm but when AC is on, it reduces to 600rpm and when moving after a stop, it reduces to about 400rpm and almost stalling, it also gives a rattling sound when moving at about 2000rpm and above. It consumes a lot of fuel too.

hi, i'm having two issues with my 2004 toyota avensis estate...firstly there is a weird smell of boiled cabbage" that i'm getting sometimes after it had been driven. thankfully this doesnt happen often. Secondly i'd like to know what are decent revs that the car should be driving at when doing 30mph, 40mph and 70mph. Thanks in anticipation :)

mine (2005 2.0 d4d) suffered the loss of power problem. only happens when the engine gets up to temp - problem non existent when cold. the problem is the egr valve sticking when hot due to carbon build up.
took EGR valve off (there are a few how to's knocking about youtube and toyota owners club) and cleaned with carb cleaner and an old toothbrush. The result? The car was instantly cured and pulled like a steam train! I've just also bought a 2009 2.2 180 tourer with 60000 on the clock and i'll be doing this fix on it too on my first free weekend to help fuel economy.

I sorted loss of power over 2000 rev in my d4d previa by proper blow in to the pipe which going to the tank. Probably was blocked at the tank filter .Previous diagnoses 1. Vrv valve 2.injectors 3.katalist blocked 4.turbo.5 scv valves. 6 maf

remove the EGR valve on the front of the engine and clean out the crusty black soot deposits that accumilate in the body of the EGR valve and you should be back in buissness.I have a taxi and need to do this about every 50,000 miles

Having the same problems. Mine is at 90,000. Starts ok and lack of power only happens once the engine is warmed up (usually). Go to pull away from junctions roundabouts no power or up hills. Have to bang it down into 1st then it may start to pull away. Very dangerous / embarrasing. I did get her serviced (fuel flush / as well) and thr problem seemed to have dissapered and now it is back again. I have also been told my clutch will need doing soon, is this linked?

I have a d4d avensis 08 had a new engine block put in at 97,000 miles under warranty as these engines have known problems but Toyota won't admit it. All the dealers say is you've put dodgy fuel in as I've also had four injectors put in at a cost to me of £1160.the car still sounds like a bag of spanners.i will never buy a toyota diesel again. My skoda superb did over 300,000 miles on same engine £ injectors.

My 2001 Toyota Previa D4D has had a serious power loss problem now for two years. It just happened one day and has never improved despite fitting new Mass Air Flow Meter, new Suction Control Valves, new fuel filter and fully reconditioned Denso injectors fitted. No fault codes found either by Toyota dealer or diesel injection specialist. D4D's are a nightmare. Even HGVs overtake me!

well my 2007 2.2 d4d is in the garage with 24k on the clock having new pistons rings and possibly block as too much carbon via the egr has built up and totally worn the engine symptoms were poor starting black smoke and lacking power and rattle around 2k rpm must be a known problem toyota are paying for it out of warrenty

I have a 03 D4D avensis, and when driving or pulling off in 1st gear, the car looses speed, n just does not respond to the accelerator, throwing out a cloud off black smoke from the exhaust, then after being stationary, revving the engine for a while, car is fine??? anyone come across this problem? or anyone could tell me what its likely to be?

Much appreciated

Dave

have your garage check the air mass meter pipes for any air leaks or faults,i had a vw golf once and when the exhaust went they fitted an aftermarket exhaust silencer that was not as big as the original and it kept blowing off and also it was strangling the power so check for any leaks on the catylitic converter as well

My 04 Avensis is doing exactly the same. This power loss always happens on the same spot on the way to school. My mechanic suggested to check all the injectors to see if any of them are faults? Are injectors anything to do with this prblem? Or it is sololy the airfilter prblems?Thank you.

October 2009
This is a known problem to the D4D engines of the latest generation. You will have to pass by Toyota to get this engine cleaned out again. The problem is that the hot exhaust air is reinjected into the engine. However, not only air, but also dirt is getting reinjected and this dirt is cluttering together and creating an obstruction in the air intake, resulting in a loss of power. Depending on your driving style, you will have this problem again after approximately 5000 km
