How do I fix starter problem?

Is the starter clickin or the starter soleniod ......
while tryin to crank it take a hammer and tap on starter ....if it starts it proably tim to get a new starter .......if not take a test light and put it on big wire to starter and see if its getting voltage while tryin to crank it
