Ford Mondeo automatic gearbox 'jumping'?

At 30\40 mph, car has begun to intermittently jump and down between gears rapidly and persitently before 'settling down'. Also, reverse can be difficult to select.

Mechanic says fluids are ok and the gearbox probably needs replacing. Is there anything else that could be worth investigating with a view to repair?
