ford mondeo m,reg 1.8lx auto?

hi i have a ford mondeo m,reg 1.8lx auto and when i am driving in top gear it will suddenly change down for no apparent reason and then it will have a gear chaging fit were it cant decide what gear it needs to be in can you help me
