Can't remove bathroom sink tap to replace washer?

My bathroom sink tap is chrome with 4 little wings for a handle and instead of popping a cap on the top and then unscrewing the bits, my tap has a screw on the side.
After unscrewing the side screw I cannot get the tap to dismantle in order to replace the washer, how do I get this apart?
The tap is probably 20 plus years old as my house was built in the late 60's in the UK and the bath, toilet and sink are still that primrose yellow & have not been as far as replaced to my knowledge, at least not for the past 16 years.
The hardware shop doesn't recognize my tap.

Shouldn't be necessary to remove the handle from the spindle in order to replace the washer.
Is there a shield with a hexagon which you can unscrew?
Unscrew this and you will have access to another hexagon where the "bonnet" is screwed into the body. Need to isolate tap before doing this - i.e turn off any gate valve etc upstream of the tap.
When you have the bonnet/spindle assembly removed, then you could put it in vice to remove the handle if you want to, because it is probably seized and will require some loosening which would be best not done when it is still attached to the tap and a brittle ceramic wash hand basin.
