What Drives will replace a Sony RDR-GX7 DW-U11A Drive?

I was getting the dirty disc error occasionally, then it progressively got worse and the machine was unable to write, then read discs. I pulled the burner out, cleaned the lens, reinstalled and it worked for one or two discs, then failed again. It seems this is a common problem with this machine.

As a last resort I found a sony dru-11a burner and installed that into the machine to replace the DW-11A. Some customization is required to get it to fit. The machine works great now.

Note to Sony:
When I bought this thing originally it was an expensive machine. I've been an early adopter of technology. I've come to expect a level of quality with the Sony technology and for the most part am happy. This machine however seems to be a "dud". Lots of people on the web complaining about similar problems and the cost of the replacement drive (DW-U11A) is extreme. I doubt that I'll buy further Sony equipment.

Just opened my sony DVD recorder as I am sure the problem is a dirty/dusty drive. I had bought a CD/DVD cleaning, and after a few passes (pressing play) I was able to get some of the original reading and writing as before. However the problem's persisted. Try a head cleaner before the RECYCLE bin!...

Hello every- one i to have one of these players (rdr-gx7) and have search high and low to obtain a compatible drive for this unit,you can get the correct one at a extortionate price or try and fit a compatible drive at great frustration.these units seem to be very well built, not the run-of-mill pvr you can buy. a shame to bin! but it seem,s that what it will come down to .

A DRU-510 works perfectly as a replacement however the tray is thicker and requires the front panel to be trimmed to fit, also its a bit of a job to fit the draw front as its also different but if you have come this far you will manage...

I've no answer to what can replace the Sony drive.... but I took my drive out (big job....!!!!) manually cleaned the laser lense and it now works.... A new drive here in Australia will set me back A$395 ...!!!! A new no-name DVD recorder with a 250G hard drive will cost me A$299...!!!!! I'm not buying Sony no more....!!!!!!!

Sorry folks, please disregard my last post. The LG drive I gave you DEFINiTELY DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY with the RDR-GX7 :-(

The LG Model GSA-4163B is a pretty good fit except you have to file the slot in the front bezel on the RDR-GX7 to fit the slightly larger trayof the LG. The bezel is plastic though and it files easily, so you can come up with a perfect job if you take your time. The LG also has a slot to fit the tray cover and the Sony cover slides in beautifully without modification. I put a drop of airplane glue on each end just to make sure it didn't pop off. A couple of hours work and a few beers and you have an invisible repair. Happy filing.

It seems as if all the RDR-GX7 has the same problems... i am in Jamaica and purchase one and it keeps telling me "disc dirty" and i took it to the tech and he wants to charge me close to what i pay for it to replace the drive, i just might forget about it, i went and bout a new panasonic one instead.... a whole lot cheaper.

I am in the same boat as you. I have an RDR-GX7 and I believe I need a new drive as well. I called Sony support and they told me that a DRU-800A or DRU-810A might work. I found a DRU-800A and tried to install it but the size/form factor is different so no luck.

That said, what was your solution? Sony support said that the estimated repair price was $120 plus handling. Please let me know how you handled this.
