How can i get the sound to work on my Teletech TVD1421?

I have brought over from Uk to NZ my daughters portable TV. We have auto tuned it and the picture on all channels is perfect, however we cannot hear the sound. There is a loud crackling as though it is not on a channel even though its tuned and the picture is perfect. You cannot hear anyone speaking. Please help?
