how can i stop my frotera engine racing?

the engine on my 1996 frontera 2 litre petrol sometimes races upto 2000 revs ive replaced the air flow meter as i was told this could be the problem it was fine for awhile but it is doing it ocasionaly again it has had new plugs and fillters as well any ideas pls

Could be the accelerator linkage/cable sticking, as nobody seems to list that in checking.
I had similar on older car and replaced the accelerator cable, but prior to replacement laced inner wire with graphite grease. Never had problems since greased it up.
