steering problems?

i have a renualt clio (Y Plate) and the steering is pretty heavy and there is a strong smell from the car. I have also noticed strong noises when turning the steering wheel....

is the smell burning! and is there a screaching noise when on full lock, if so the auxillary drive belt is probably slipping so may need retentioning or replacing , if its not that the pump is probably knackered
