Mend Dyson DC04 Vacuum Repair

Dyson DC04 - Motor?

Wonder if anyone can help.

I have a problem with my DC04 (whining noise, burning smell, etc.). Someone suggested this was the clutch. Bought a new clutch and fitted, but problem persists.

So my question: does this sound like a motor problem, and if yes, anyone any ideas on how much a new motor costs, how easy it is to fit, and who will win the SuperBowl?

Thanks.

Steve

I need to renew the cable connection on my dyson dc04 but can't find a way into the casing to carry out the repair - can you help? I'm usually quite good with small repairs.

When I opened up my Dyson 04 I found that the fan securing nut was loose and the motor burnt out. Most likely no fan caused overheating. When fitting replacement motor some metal glue on the nut/threads might prevent a re-occurance

If its the motor, sounds like the brushes need changing. Minor job, and they cost about £4.oo..

Seems to be a bit of a trend here, average Dyson is over £200, personally I’d expect the motor to last, however doing a simple Google search reveals a wreath of motor related faults which is disappointing. Our DC14 has just gone bang after 18 months yet my old Numatic Henry was under half the price, I’ve had for 10 years, kept in the garage and sucked up water and it’s never missed a beat.

I meant to add to my post that by booking a £69 fixed fee repair, I was avoiding the problem that the original poster (Steve) encountered, namely replacing a part only to find that it was not faulty in the first place.

I am aware that the original thread is years old but people will google the same problem now, hence why I am posting.

There's conflicting advice on this BB.

Re Dan D's post at Jan 09 where he says 'Dont go to Dyson - they want a £65 call-out charge plus overpriced parts', the latter is wrong. The £65 charge (now £69 - I have just paid it) includes all parts. This is why we decided to go for this option when we had the same problem. For £69, the fault (a burnt out motor) was repaired (i.e. a new motor installed) and two other parts replaced too (a split hose & a HEPA filter, the latter just because it was old).

In short, I would say Dyson give it what arguably amounts to a service for the £69, with all parts included.

As for the engineer's post saying the cost is/was £79 back in 2004, it isn't now - it is £69.

Guys, I'd like to thank you for the information on this page, I just replaced the motor on our old DC04 after diagnosing the fault as a dying motor thanks to your information.

Anyway, £37 and a few hours work and I now have a Dyson of my own for the garage :-)

Dont go to Dyson - they want a £65 call-out charge plus overpriced parts - I've now fixed two DC 04s and I'm about to do a recently found DC14 (sorts my mates out with hoovers and keeps the plastic out of the ground!). I always get my motors off ebay - just found one for £26.95 inc. postage - if anyone can find it cheaper please point me there!

Cheers and good luck - They're fiddly buggers to get apart, but its satisfying to get them back at work.

The best place to buy genuine motors for Dyson is www.ukvacuumspares.co.uk £36 and next day delivery. Best of all, you can find anything, i mean any thing thats fitted inside Dyson from this co. You can also view exploded view of diagrams to identify what you are looking for. The best thing is their own search Box. Just enter your dyson dc0 number and it will pull up all the bits and bobs for that model.

Don't use Dyson Parts! Rip off prices. The motor burning smell could be the armature windings. Look on any search engine for 'dyson motor' & you will find dozens of parts suppliers. My DC04 has the same problem now & the best price (which I will try to beat is £41.03 inc vat for a complete motor (be careful, there are several models!). The armature alone is also available at £17.50 ish if you feel confident that it is just that which is dud. Look at the brushes for wear too. Good luck.
